Prebiotic ingredients from India: psyllium, acacia and inulin
Why India matters in the prebiotic ingredients market, how psyllium, acacia fibre and inulin compare, and what to specify when you source them.

Gut health is one of the fastest-growing areas in wellness, and prebiotic fibres are the foundation of most gut-health formulas. India plays an outsized role: it supplies most of the world's psyllium, and its domestic prebiotic ingredients market is growing quickly. This guide compares the three fibres buyers ask us for most and what to specify for each.
Psyllium husk: Gujarat's speciality
Psyllium (Plantago ovata), known in India as isabgol, is grown mainly in north Gujarat and Rajasthan, and the cleaning and milling industry is concentrated close to our Ahmedabad office. Psyllium husk is traded by purity — commonly 85% to 99% — and by mesh, from whole husk to fine powder.
Specify purity, mesh, swell volume and light extraneous matter
Ask for microbiology and pesticide residues against your destination's limits
Psyllium is a soluble, gel-forming fibre: it suits fibre powders and capsules more than drinks that must stay clear
Acacia fibre: gentle and versatile
Acacia fibre (gum arabic) dissolves clear, has almost no taste and is gentle at higher doses, which makes it popular in drinks, gummies and stick packs. Specify the source species, viscosity, solubility and microbiology.
Inulin: the classic prebiotic
Inulin, usually from chicory root, is the most studied prebiotic fibre and has an authorised claim in the EU and UK relating to chicory inulin and normal bowel function at a specified daily intake. Specify the degree of polymerisation, purity and sugar content.
Building a gut-health blend
Many brands combine a fibre base with traditional digestive botanicals — triphala, fennel, ginger, turmeric — as in YVELIA+ GUT+ and Golden Gut Symphony. Browse the full Gut & Digestion collection for single ingredients and blends.
Claims
Fibre claims are authorised only for specific fibres at specific doses. Outside those, describe traditional digestive use and the fibre content. "Prebiotic" itself is treated as a health claim in some markets, so check before printing it on pack.
Frequently asked questions
Why source psyllium husk from India?
India supplies most of the world's psyllium, grown mainly in Gujarat and Rajasthan, where the cleaning and milling industry is concentrated.
Which prebiotic fibre suits a clear drink?
Acacia fibre or inulin. Psyllium forms a gel and suits fibre powders and capsules better.
Can I say 'prebiotic' on the pack?
In some markets, including the UK and EU, 'prebiotic' is treated as a health claim. Check the rules for your market or use fibre-content wording.
