Milk thistle powder vs extract: silymarin grades explained

Seed powder or silymarin-standardised extract? How milk thistle is specified and tested, and how to word it for your market.

Dried botanicals and herbs arranged for supplement formulation

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is the leading Western botanical in liver-wellness products. Buyers search for "milk thistle powder", but what most formulas need is a silymarin-standardised extract. Here is how to choose between the two and specify the one you need.

Seed powder

Milk thistle seed powder is the whole seed, milled. It contains silymarin at a low level along with the seed's oil and fibre, so servings are large. It suits granules, teas and blends with traditional positioning, and is often used as part of a wider liver-wellness formula.

Standardised extract

Milk thistle extract is concentrated and standardised — most commonly to 80% silymarin. A capsule can then deliver a defined, consistent amount in a small dose, which is why the extract dominates capsules and tablets.

UV or HPLC?

Silymarin is a group of flavonolignans. Total silymarin is usually measured by UV, while silybin (the main component) is measured by HPLC. A specification of "80% silymarin (UV) / 30% silybin (HPLC)" gives both figures and lets your QA compare lots properly.

The specification to agree

  • Identity: Silybum marianum seed, extraction solvent and marker methods

  • Silymarin (UV) and silybin (HPLC)

  • Loss on drying, ash, mesh and bulk density

  • Residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticide residues and microbiology

Combining with Ayurvedic liver herbs

Several brands pair milk thistle with Ayurvedic botanicals — kutki, bhumi amla, kalmegh and turmeric — as in our Liver Health granules and YVELIA+ HEPATO+. Browse the Liver collection for options.

Claims

There is no authorised health claim for milk thistle in the UK or EU. Describe traditional use, avoid "detox", "cleanse" or liver-repair wording, and check the rules in Australia and the GCC before printing. Our UK import guide explains why.

Frequently asked questions

Is milk thistle powder the same as milk thistle extract?

No. Powder is the whole milled seed with a low silymarin level; the extract is concentrated and standardised, commonly to 80% silymarin.

What does 80% silymarin mean?

That total silymarin, measured by UV, is 80% of the extract. Silybin, the main component, is reported separately by HPLC.

Can milk thistle supplements say 'detox'?

Not in the UK or EU — 'detox' is not an authorised claim. Describe traditional use instead.
