Supplying Australia: TGA listing, FSANZ foods and clean-label proof

How Australian sponsors and food brands evaluate overseas ingredient suppliers — permitted ingredients, GMP evidence, biosecurity and traceability.

Bowls of whole-food ingredients: almonds, oats, blueberries, coconut and honey

Australian buyers are known for scrutinising sourcing transparency. Whether you are a TGA sponsor of complementary medicines or a food brand selling superfood powders, you will need a supplier who can evidence identity, quality and origin — clearly and quickly.

Is it a medicine or a food?

Products that make therapeutic claims are therapeutic goods regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). Most supplements are listed medicines (AUST L), which must use permitted ingredients and choose from a list of permitted indications. Superfood powders, beverage premixes and functional foods sold without therapeutic claims fall under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, administered by FSANZ and enforced by the states.

What TGA sponsors need from an overseas supplier

  • Ingredient identity and specification that match the permitted ingredient

  • Certificates of analysis with validated methods

  • Evidence of GMP for the manufacturing site acceptable to the TGA

  • Stability data supporting the claimed shelf life

  • Change-control commitments so the ingredient stays consistent

Biosecurity and imported food

Australia's biosecurity rules are strict. Plant-based products must meet the import conditions for their type — processed powders are treated differently from seeds or whole plant parts — and some may need a permit or treatment. Imported food can be inspected under the Imported Food Inspection Scheme. Check conditions before placing an order.

Clean-label and organic proof

Australian retailers increasingly ask for single-ingredient products with no undeclared carriers or flow agents, and for organic claims backed by certification they recognise. Lot-level traceability — growing region, harvest period and processing site — turns clean-label claims into evidence.

Traceability in practice

YVELIA records origin data for every lot and shares it alongside the COA. Ask for a sample traceability sheet with your first quotation.
